Philadelphia's Gayborhood is bordered by Washington Square and Broad Street, the Gayborhood is the beating rainbow heart of Philly’s gay scene, conveniently located next to the Ave-nue of the Arts, the heart of the theater scene, on the stretch of Broad Street between City Hall and South known as the Avenue of the Arts.
The area has undergone a recent revival (and picked up the alternate name Midtown Village), in part thanks to power couple Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran and their spate of fun restaurants and shops. Though safer than ever, Disneyland this ain’t — sex shops, porn theaters and roving escorts all still make the scene — but as a shopping, dining and drinking destination, the neighborhood always delivers the goods.
What to Do?
- Hit up El Vez for the blood-orange margaritas and black-and-white photo booth
- Sample seasonal flavors at Philly’s own Capogiro Gelato; try anything paired with the black-as-midnight cioccolato scuro
- Burn up the dancefloor at Woody’s or Sisters, where the drinks come extra-strong
