Down North Pizza in Philadelphia Serves Detroit-Style Pizza and Wings
The community of former prisoners inspires the concept of Down North Pizza in Philadelphia. The building was purchased for $10,000 as a real estate investment. Its eventual goal was to open a pizza shop for former prisoners. In addition to a mural celebrating their journeys toward freedom, the walls of the restaurant display pictures of the 1985 MOVE bombing, which saw Philadelphia police drop a military-grade bomb on a Black liberation commune, killing 11 people, including five children. Chef Carter spent twelve years in prison and eventually got his culinary education.
The menu at Down North is filled with Detroit-style pies. This Philadelphia eatery has won awards for its pizzas.
