Philadelphia, PA - On Monday night Zahav, the longtime Philadelphia restaurant centered on Israeli cuisine, walked away with this years James Beard Award for outstanding restaurant it is annual award ceremony at Chicago's Lyric Opera House.


Zahav, the Hebrew term for gold, dedicated to Israeli food and launched in Society Hill in 2008, and is well known in Philadelphia for its authentic Israeli flavors and cultural flair.

The James Beard Awards or the Oscars of the food world begin in 1990, as the nonprofit James Beard Foundation, named after "the father of American cuisine,” as a way to honor exceptional names in the food and beverage trade.

Some other noteworthy winners were Ashley Christensen, named outstanding chef for her work at Poole's Diner in Raleigh, North Carolina as well as New York's Frenchette for the best new restaurant.

It was just last year, Zahav’s chef and co-owner, Michael Solomonov, was named the outstanding chef in America by the foundation.
