Philadelphia, PA - With Governor Wolf’s stay at home order extended to June 4th, one local hospitality group and restaurateur would like the state to explore new suggestions to save the restaurant industry.
Avram Hornik of FCM Hospitality is asking local and state officials to allow outdoor dining to revive the suffering restaurant industry.
Given that dining establishments will be required to use caution when reopening, outdoor dining just might be the saving grace for many owners hit hard by the CORVID-19 pandemic.
The fact is many small restaurants will never be able to open with social distancing guidelines for dining inside which typically only seat 20 to 40 patrons, if that number is cut by 75% may establishment will not be profitable.
The state has currently lifted limitations for golf courses, along with a few PA counties now entering the yellow phase of opening. So, why hold off on opening restaurants if there is a safe action?
“Golf courses are now open in the state of Pennsylvania, which includes access to food and drink on the property in a social setting,” said Hornik.
As we begin to enjoy the nice weather, its time to start the process moving towards saving restaurants before the peak of the summer kicks in.
From the city viewpoint, the Mayor could help lead the charge for outside seating for existing restaurants by increasing sidewalk seating regulations, modifying street parking spaces near restaurants towards outdoor seating, as well as permitting the use of surrounding parking lots for dining without the need of zoning.
The Governor’s office could help with new health regulations and guidelines, in addition to allowing existing liquor license holders to serve in adjacent or non-contiguous spaces, as was done for golf courses.
