Philadelphia, PA - Thank goodness they won. For the more significant part of four quarters against the Giants, the Eagles looked bound for their 7th loss of a tumultuous season. They fell behind early thanks to poor run defense and terrific open field running from rookie phenom Saquon Barkley.
Week 13: Philadelphia Eagles Vs Washington Redskins
The Eagles trailed 19-3 nearing the break, halftime that the Eagles desperately wanted to reach. The Giants, however, we're looking to add more to their lead. Eli Manning forced a pass right into the arms of Eagles safety Malcolm Jenkins inside the red zone on the next play. This interception was the turning point in a tale of two halves. In the second half, the Eagles pounded the Giants with a healthy dose of rookie Josh Adams, and a well-executed game plan. Including a gutsy 4th-and-2 call by coach Doug Pederson on the game-winning drive. Jake Elliott would bang through the game-winning kick with little time remaining, and the Eagles survived.
A season sweep of the Giants is always lovely, but this team is still far from the one that took home the Lombardi last February. The Philadelphia Eagles kept their playoff hopes alive with this latest victory, and at 5-6, they’re only one game behind the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins in a weak NFC East division. On Monday night, the Eagles face a pivotal matchup against the Skins. They are operating sans Alex Smith, who suffered a gruesome leg injury two weeks ago. Being said, Colt McCoy, the backup, is one of the better backup passers in the league. The Redskins very nearly downed the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, falling victim to an Amari Cooper explosion. The Redskins are a good team and have a good team surrounding McCoy, meaning they can very well win.
The Eagles need to protect better. Carson Wentz was running for his life against Olivier Vernon, and the Giants pass rush. The Redskins boast a monstrous pass rush, meaning this Eagles offense, which has been much healthier than last year, needs to step it up. The Eagles enjoyed a beautiful day on the ground, with Josh Adams seizing a role as the lead back in Duce Staley’s running back core. The Eagles defense played very well in the second half, but the first half was very concerning. Adrian Peterson, even at an older age, is still a very powerful runner that can and will charge through oncoming defenders. The Giants barely ran the football at all in the second half, a significant factor in their collapse. The Redskins will stay committed and have before. The Eagles need to be ready. I expect a slow start out the gate, a common thing for the Eagles this season. Despite this, they’ll be able to fight back and win a critical NFC East bout.
