PHILADELPHIA - Manayunk is preparing to say goodbye to a true neighborhood institution. Jake's & Cooper's Wine Bar, the beloved culinary anchor of Main Street, will permanently close its doors on October 19, 2026. The closure marks the end of a remarkable 39-year run for the local staple.
Chef and owner Bruce Cooper, 72, has announced his retirement and is selling the side-by-side properties that have housed his life's work. The final day of service brings the restaurant's story full circle: Cooper originally opened Jake's on October 19, 1987—the very same day the stock market suffered its historic "Black Monday" crash. Despite that ominous start, the restaurant thrived, evolving from a white-tablecloth destination to a casual wine bar, and weathering everything from major floods to the global pandemic over the decades.
To celebrate nearly four decades of memories, the restaurant is offering special promotions as a thank-you to the community leading up to the final day. Past employees can enjoy a 50% discount on Sundays and Mondays, and September's Restaurant Week pricing (originally scheduled for Sept. 14–20) will be extended through the very last day of service. The long goodbye will culminate in a lively final closing party on October 19, designed to completely empty the bar and kitchen, with all proceeds being donated to a local charity.
