PHILADELPHIA - The city of Philadelphia has once again proven its status as a premier dining destination, taking home two prestigious honors at the 2026 James Beard Awards® presented by American Express and Resy. Often considered the pinnacle of culinary recognition in the United States, the awards celebrate exceptional talent and a commitment to fostering a thriving, equitable dining culture.

More than 1,800 guests gathered for the sold-out Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony at the Lyric Opera of Chicago on Monday, June 15. The event was hosted by author and Top Chef judge Gail Simmons, drawing a star-studded crowd of food media personalities, entertainers, and acclaimed culinary leaders.

Amidst the nationwide celebration of American food culture, Philadelphia stood out with wins in two major categories:

  • Outstanding Restaurant: Kalaya, located on the border of Fishtown and Kensington, took home the coveted Outstanding Restaurant award presented by Acqua Panna® Natural Spring Water. This top honor recognizes establishments that demonstrate consistent excellence in food, atmosphere, hospitality, and operations.

  • Best Chef (Mid-Atlantic): Jesse Ito, the talented chef and owner of Royal Sushi & Izakaya, secured the Best Chef award for the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Washington, D.C., Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

Clare Reichenbach, CEO of the James Beard Foundation, praised this year's recipients. “Congratulations to the 2026 Restaurant and Chef Award winners! We are truly honored to celebrate your extraordinary contribution to American food culture," she stated. "This year’s winners embody excellence across many dimensions—where exceptional craft and talent meet leadership, purpose, and a deep commitment to the people they serve.”

The impact of these awards resonates deeply within the restaurant industry. Dawn Padmore, VP of Awards for the James Beard Foundation, noted that the winners showcase how dynamic and expansive American dining has become, reflecting excellence in both major cities and smaller towns alike.

Elizabeth Falkner, Awards Committee Chair, emphasized the transformative nature of the recognition: “In an industry facing real challenges, this kind of acknowledgment can open doors, reinvigorate teams, and make a meaningful difference to a business or professional’s future.”

For Philadelphia, the dual victories of Kalaya and Royal Sushi & Izakaya highlight the city's vibrant, diverse, and world-class dining landscape. As the James Beard Foundation marks its 40th anniversary, these wins serve as a powerful reminder of the vital role independent restaurants play in our daily lives, culture, and local economy.
