PHILADELPHIA - One of South Philadelphia's most enduring dining destinations has officially reopened its doors. Gnocchi's, a beloved fixture on East Passyunk Avenue since 1989, has entered a new chapter under the stewardship of Maria Enokian and Chef Ryan Moore, blending decades of neighborhood history with a bold new culinary vision.

A 36-Year Legacy Continues.

The story of Gnocchi's began at the legendary Ristorante San Carlo under Mama Frusone, whose exacting standards and handmade pastas shaped a generation of local cooks. It later became a true community cornerstone under the leadership of Missoum Khemici. Upon his retirement, Khemici passed the torch to Enokian and Moore, entrusting them with 36 years of tables set and meals shared.

"Life is short," said Maria Enokian. "This restaurant has witnessed generations come and go; so savor every moment, cherish every breath, and remember: even the darkest days can be softened by hospitality, compassion, and a memorable meal. I would love people to dream of working here and dream of eating here someday."

Italian American Fusion

With Chef Ryan Moore at the helm, the kitchen has been rebuilt around a philosophy of "Italian American Fusion"—using Italian tradition as the foundation and American creativity as the engine. The menu moves elegantly through classic Italian courses (Antipasti, Insalata, Primo, Mare, Terra, Contorno, and Dolce) while showcasing the kitchen's dual allegiances.

"Food means the world to me. And cooking is its finest language," shared Chef Moore. "At this kitchen, we treat every batch as a craft, honoring tradition while reimagining what casual fine dining can taste like."

Standout dishes that define this new era include:

  • Housemade Ricotta Mascarpone Gnocchi
  • Fettuccine Boscaiola: Featuring provolone-stuffed chorizo, oven-roasted tomato, and a creamy vodka sauce.
  • Braised Lamb Shank: Served with smoked Gouda polenta and a merlot jus.
  • 14-ounce Prime Ribeye: Accompanied by a blackberry brandy gastrique.
  • Stuffed Branzino: Filled with mussels, shrimp, and fresh herbs in a curry broth.

An Italian espresso service rounds out the menu, along with imported Sicilian sodas and desserts like Homemade Tiramisu and Sweet Potato Bread Pudding.
