PhillyBite10OHIO - The retail landscape in Ohio is bracing for a significant shift as the state prepares to bid farewell to three massive household names. By June 2026, the final shuttering of several corporate giants will leave major vacancies in shopping centers from Cleveland to Cincinnati. Driven by total company liquidations and the final stages of bankruptcy wind-downs, these departures mark the end of an era for Ohio-based retail empires and national staples alike.

Here are the three retail giants leaving Ohio this June.

1. Big Lots (Statewide Exit)

In the most significant blow to Ohio's retail sector this year, the Columbus-headquartered Big Lots is entering its final weeks of operation. After decades as a staple of Ohio's discount market, the company is completing a total wind-down of its North American footprint following failed restructuring attempts.

As a brand born and bred in the Buckeye State, the exit is particularly poignant. Final "total liquidation" sales are reaching their peak, with all remaining storefronts expected to be completely vacant by mid-June 2026. This exit impacts nearly every major county in Ohio, including high-traffic sites in:

  • Columbus (Hamilton Road and West Broad Street)
  • Cincinnati (West Chester and Western Hills)
  • Toledo and Dayton regional centers

2. Value City Furniture (Brand Liquidation)

Another iconic Columbus-based empire, Value City Furniture, is officially closing its doors. Its parent company, American Signature Inc., announced earlier this year that it would liquidate all remaining stores after more than a century in the furniture business.

For generations of Ohioans, Value City was the primary destination for affordable home furnishings. The final phase of the wind-down is scheduled for completion this June. The closure of these "power center" anchors—which often occupy 40,000+ square feet—will leave some of the largest vacancies in the State retail history. Notable final closures include the flagship-style locations in Beavercreek, Dublin, and Canton.

3. Rue21 (All Remaining Locations)

The teen fashion retailer Rue21 is finishing the liquidation of its entire fleet this June. Following its third and final bankruptcy filing, the company was unable to secure a buyer to keep its physical presence alive, leading to a total exit from the brick-and-mortar market.

While "Going Out of Business" sales began earlier this spring, the final inventory clear-outs and lease handovers are slated for June 2026. Ohio is losing a major mall presence with the departure of Rue21 from dozens of regional hubs, including:

  • Easton Town Center (Columbus)
  • Great Northern Mall (North Olmsted)
  • Ohio Valley Mall (St. Clairsville)
  • Kenwood Towne Centre (Cincinnati)

The Future of Ohio's "Ghost" Retail Spaces

Ohio FlagThe departure of these three giants—particularly the homegrown Big Lots and Value City Furniture—leaves a massive hole in Ohio's commercial real estate. However, the vacancy also brings a turning point for the State suburban hubs. Developers in cities like Columbus and Cleveland are already looking toward the future, with several former retail sites being scouted for light industrial conversion, medical office suites, and experiential entertainment centers.

While the "familiar orange signs" of Big Lots may be disappearing this June, Ohio's retail hubs are already pivoting to adapt to a digital-first economy.
