Blank Street Coffee is Bringing Its Matcha and Espresso to Rittenhouse SquarePHILADELPHIA - New York City's rapidly expanding Blank Street Coffee is set to make its highly anticipated debut in Philadelphia this summer. Known for its seafoam green storefronts and colorful specialty drinks, the chain is setting up shop in two key Philadelphia neighborhoods, including a prime spot in Rittenhouse Square.

Breathing New Life into 18th & Spruce

For Rittenhouse residents, the corner of 18th and Spruce Street has felt quiet since the neighborhood Starbucks closed its doors in September 2025. The vacancy won't last much longer, as Blank Street Coffee is moving into the 1801 Spruce Street location.

This Rittenhouse storefront is expected to open in the summer of 2026 and will mark the brand's second outpost in the city. Taking over a highly visible corner, the location is designed to cater perfectly to the neighborhood's grab-and-go lifestyle, offering quick service for locals commuting, shopping, or taking a stroll through the nearby park. The brand's signature green wrapping is already covering the windows as construction gets underway.

A Sprawling Debut in University City

While Rittenhouse will house the brand's second location, Blank Street's official Philadelphia debut is taking place in University City. The chain is opening a massive 3,500-square-foot café at 3603 Walnut Street, located near the Penn Bookstore and the Inn at Penn. This storefront occupies a space formerly occupied by Bluemercury and is projected to be one of Blank Street's largest retail locations in the United States.

The Blank Street Experience

Founded in August 2020 by Vinay Menda, Issam Freiha, and Ignacio Llado, Blank Street started as a single, 5x10 battery-powered coffee cart operating in a Brooklyn diner's garden. By mid-2025, the company had grown into an enterprise valued at approximately $500 million, operating around 90 locations spanning the U.S. and the U.K., with American outposts in cities like Boston and Washington, D.C.

The chain has carved out a unique niche in the competitive coffee market through a few key operational strategies:

  • Micro-Café Formats: Blank Street typically utilizes smaller footprints to remove excess overhead, allowing them to focus resources on top-tier specialty coffees and paying baristas above-market wages.
  • Speed and Aesthetics: The brand focuses heavily on high-efficiency service, utilizing automated espresso systems.
  • A Social-Media Ready Menu: Patrons can expect a menu centered around specialty iced espresso and vibrant, layered matcha beverages—drinks that photograph beautifully and are highly popular on social media.

As the neighborhood awaits the grand opening, Philadelphia's coffee scene is gearing up for a dynamic, colorful addition.
