Its arrival comes on the heels of other prominent Yemeni coffee concepts making their mark on the surrounding Center City neighborhoods. MOTW Coffee & Pastries recently opened its doors at 2101 Market St., and Haraz Coffee House is planned for 1822 Chestnut St. Together, these openings are quickly solidifying the area as a thriving hub for authentic Yemeni coffee culture.
Design Inspired by the Mountains
"Jabal" translates to "mountain" in Arabic, and the cafe's design and sourcing lean heavily into this heritage. Architectural renderings of the new Philadelphia location reveal a jaw-dropping, sculptural wooden facade that creates a sense of movement and depth right on Chestnut Street. The signature mountain-wave design carries throughout the expansive 5,000-square-foot interior. The layout is designed to offer an elegant yet welcoming oasis that feels more like a feature in a design magazine than a standard grab-and-go coffee shop.
Premium Roasts and Late-Night Hangouts
At the core of Jabal's menu is its premium, organic, single-origin Yemeni coffee. The beans are handpicked by farmers from high-altitude terrains and sun-dried using generations-old methods. This meticulous process produces a robust flavor profile characterized by notes of rich dried fruit, warm spices, and a subtle hint of chocolate.
Beyond the coffee, Jabal brings a unique late-night element to the city's café culture. The brand's original location in Dearborn, Michigan, stays open until 2:00 AM on weeknights and 3:00 AM on weekends, offering a much-needed late-night hangout space that goes beyond traditional bars and restaurants.
