Pennsylvania City To Be Included in Michelin GuidePENNSYLVANIA - Philadelphia's dynamic and acclaimed dining scene is about to receive new international recognition. The Michelin Guide, the world-renowned authority on culinary excellence, has officially announced that Philadelphia will be included in its newly minted Michelin Guide Northeast Cities edition.

This exciting development means that Philadelphia restaurants will be eligible for the coveted Michelin stars, Bib Gourmand distinctions, and other recognitions for the first time, further solidifying the city's status as a premier food destination.

Understanding the Michelin Guides: Green vs. Red

For years, Philadelphia has proudly held its own Michelin Green Guide. This guide focuses on travel and tourism, highlighting a city's top attractions, hotels, and overall visitor experiences, often awarding one to three stars to notable sights. The Green Guide for Philadelphia, available in English and French, already praises the city's art, history, and cultural vibrancy, featuring insights from notable Philadelphians.

However, the arrival of the Michelin Red Guide is a game-changer for the city's culinary landscape. The Red Guide is the publication that specifically evaluates and awards Michelin stars (one, two, or three) to restaurants and chefs demonstrating exceptional fine dining, based on rigorous criteria including quality of ingredients, harmony of flavors, mastery of techniques, the personality of the chef in the cuisine, and consistency.

Philadelphia's Entry into the Northeast Cities Edition:

Michelin announced on Monday, May 12, 2025, that Philadelphia and Boston will join the existing Michelin Guide Northeast Cities edition, which previously included Chicago, New York City, and Washington, D.C.

"We are thrilled that Boston and Philadelphia will join the MICHELIN Guide Northeast Cities as both are premier destinations for gourmets to experience a rich diversity of cuisine and culinary history," said Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the MICHELIN Guide. He added, "The local passion, talent, and camaraderie in both Boston and Philadelphia is evident in their restaurant communities, and the anonymous Inspectors look forward to spotlighting their unique experiences in both cities."

Inspectors Are Already Dining:

The exciting news for Philadelphia's chefs and restaurateurs is that anonymous Michelin inspectors are already in the field, making dining reservations and meticulously evaluating restaurants throughout the city. This behind-the-scenes process will culminate in the first-ever Michelin selections for Philadelphia.

Anticipation for the 2025 Selections:

The complete list of Philadelphia restaurants receiving Michelin stars, Bib Gourmand awards (recognizing great food at good value), and other recommendations for the 2025 guide will be revealed later during the annual Michelin Guide Northeast Cities Ceremony.

Gregg Caren, President and CEO of the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, hailed the announcement: "In recent years, Philadelphia has become as renowned for its chef-driven food scene as it is for the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and its passionate sports fans... This announcement that The MICHELIN Guide will be exploring the Philadelphia region to experience our restaurants acknowledges years of hard work, collaboration, and extraordinary culinary innovation."

What This Means for Philadelphia's Food Scene:

The inclusion of Philadelphia in the Michelin Red Guide is expected to:

  • Elevate Global Recognition: Further boost the city's international reputation as a top-tier culinary destination.
  • Attract Food Tourism: Draw more discerning diners and culinary tourists to Philadelphia.
  • Inspire Excellence: Encourage chefs and restaurants to strive for the highest quality and innovation standards.
  • Generate Excitement: Create significant buzz within the local food community and among diners eagerly awaiting the first star announcements.
