Philly Zoo's 'Haunted' Solitude at "Zoo Done It?" Mystery NightPHILADELPHIA, PA – Tucked away on the grounds of the Philadelphia Zoo stands The Solitude, a historic 1784 mansion built for William Penn's grandson that is generally accepted by Zoo staff to be haunted. Access to this landmark is extremely rare, but this summer, the Zoo is offering a unique opportunity to get inside—if you can solve a murder first.

The grand prize for the Zoo's second annual after-hours mystery night, "Zoo Done It?" on Saturday, August 2, 2025, is an exclusive, private guided tour of The Solitude during the "spooky season" this fall. This is the only opportunity for the public to gain such exclusive access to the historic and reputedly haunted building.

The Haunting of The Solitude

Built for John Penn as an escape from the city, The Solitude has a long history of strange occurrences reported by Zoo staff. The most common event involves a mysterious light in the attic, which often turns on by itself late at night and sometimes remains lit until morning. The historic landmark has been covered by media and television programs from around the world for its paranormal lore.

"This is the only time we give the public a chance to get exclusive access to The Solitude, a famous American historical landmark," said Patrick McMaster, the Zoo's Vice President of Marketing and Communication.

How to Win Your Way Inside

To win this rare tour, participants must solve the "Zoo Done It?" mystery. The 21+ event, produced in partnership with Without a Cue Productions, is a historical scavenger hunt set in 1874. Guests will explore the entire Zoo after hours, interacting with live actors and collecting clues to solve a "very Victorian murder."

The winning team will receive a grand prize package that includes not only a private tour of The Solitude but also two flex passes to the Red Rum Theatre and a behind-the-scenes experience at the Zoo for up to six guests.

Tickets for the "Zoo Done It?" event are on sale now, starting at $50, and can be purchased at the Philadelphia Zoo's website. This event offers a unique opportunity for history buffs, paranormal enthusiasts, and puzzle lovers to test their wits for a chance to explore one of Philadelphia's most intriguing and exclusive historic homes.
