PhillyBite10WEST VIRGINIA - West Virginia’s retail landscape is undergoing a quiet but significant shift this season. As several national apparel chains face the final stages of bankruptcy and liquidation, the "Going Out of Business" signs have reached some of the state's most prominent shopping centers. From the Ohio River to the Eastern Panhandle, these departures mark a changing era for the Mountain State’s mall culture.

Here are four iconic clothing retailers shuttering West Virginia locations this spring.

1. Rue21 (All Locations)

In what is arguably the biggest blow to teen and young adult fashion in the state, Rue21 is in the process of closing all of its physical stores nationwide. After filing for its third bankruptcy, the Pennsylvania-based retailer was unable to secure a buyer to maintain its brick-and-mortar operations, leading to a total wind-down.

West Virginia, with its strong reliance on regional malls, is losing a major tenant in several key markets. Liquidation sales are expected to wrap up by late spring 2026 at locations including:

  • Ohio Valley Mall (St. Clairsville/Wheeling area)
  • Grand Central Mall (Vienna)
  • Meadowbrook Mall (Bridgeport)
  • Morgantown Mall

2. Express (Charleston & Barboursville)

Following a Chapter 11 filing, fashion staple Express is narrowing its footprint to focus on its "Express Edit" boutique strategy and its most profitable locations. The brand identified nearly 100 stores for closure as it works through a restructuring process aimed at stabilizing the business for a new ownership group.

In West Virginia, the impact is hitting major regional shopping destinations. Inventory clear-outs have been underway throughout the spring, with doors expected to close for the final time by mid-May 2026 at:

  • Charleston Town Center
  • Huntington Mall (Barboursville)

3. Eddie Bauer (Multiple Locations)

The outdoor apparel pioneer Eddie Bauer is officially exiting the physical retail space this season. After the entity operating the brand's 175 stores failed to find a buyer during bankruptcy proceedings, the decision was made to shift the legendary brand to a digital-only model.

For West Virginians who relied on the brand for high-quality outdoor gear, the loss of physical shops in regional hubs and outlet centers like those in the Eastern Panhandle marks the end of a century-long retail tradition. Most locations are expected to finalize their inventory liquidations and vacate by late May 2026.

4. Francesca’s (All Remaining Locations)

The boutique staple Francesca’s is reaching the end of the road for its physical storefronts. Following a second bankruptcy filing and the sudden loss of investor funding earlier this year, the chain is liquidating all 457 of its boutiques across the country.

West Virginia shoppers are losing their neighborhood boutiques in several major centers, including:

  • Grand Central Mall (Vienna)
  • Huntington Mall (Barboursville)
  • Morgantown Mall

Going-out-of-business sales have reached deep discounts as the boutiques prepare to vacate their spaces by mid-spring 2026.

The Future of West Virginia’s Retail Hubs

The departure of these four giants leaves significant vacancies in West Virginia’s commercial corridors. While these closures are a blow to traditional shopping, mall operators in cities like Morgantown and Charleston are already looking toward the future. Many of these spaces are being scouted for non-traditional tenants—such as medical offices, fitness centers, and community service hubs—as West Virginia’s retail spaces adapt to a changing economic environment.
