DELAWARE STATE - Delaware’s tax-free shopping havens are seeing a significant shift this spring as several national clothing brands begin the final stages of liquidation. From the bustling Christiana Mall to the popular outlet centers in Rehoboth Beach, the departure of these iconic labels marks a transition in the First State's retail landscape.
1. Nordstrom (Newark)
In a major blow to the Christiana Mall—Delaware's premier shopping destination—Nordstrom is officially closing its doors this spring. As part of a broader corporate restructuring to focus on its "Nordstrom Rack" locations and high-performing flagship stores, the Newark location has scheduled its final day of operation for April 30, 2026. This departure leaves a massive anchor vacancy at the mall, where the retailer has been a cornerstone for upscale fashion since 2011.
2. Eddie Bauer (Rehoboth Beach)
The outdoor apparel pioneer Eddie Bauer is officially exiting the brick-and-mortar market following a total liquidation of its physical store assets. While the brand will continue as a digital-only entity, all physical shops are slated for closure this season.
Delaware’s sole remaining location at the Tanger Outlets in Rehoboth Beach is on the chopping block. Store representatives have confirmed a final closing date of April 28, 2026. For coastal shoppers, the loss of this outlet staple marks the end of an era for in-person technical gear and outerwear shopping in the region.
3. Rue21 (All Locations)
Teen fashion retailer Rue21 is in the final stages of liquidating its entire fleet after filing for its third bankruptcy. Unlike previous restructurings, the brand failed to find a buyer to keep the physical stores open, leading to a total wind-down of its North American footprint.
With locations in regional shopping centers across the state, Delaware is losing several community mainstays. "Going Out of Business" sales are expected to wrap up by late May 2026 at locations including:
- Christiana Mall (Newark)
- Dover Mall (Dover)
- Tanger Outlets (Rehoboth Beach)
4. Francesca’s (All Remaining Locations)
The boutique staple Francesca’s is reaching the end of the road for its storefronts. Following a second bankruptcy filing and a sudden loss of investor funding, the chain is liquidating all 457 of its boutiques nationwide.
Delaware shoppers are saying goodbye to these free-spirited boutiques in several popular centers. Liquidation sales have been underway through the spring, with most locations set to vacate by mid-May 2026, including:
- Christiana Mall (Newark)
- Concord Mall (Wilmington)
- Tanger Outlets (Rehoboth Beach)
The Future of Delaware Retail
The departure of these four clothing giants leaves notable gaps in Delaware’s commercial hubs. However, the vacancy at major centers like Christiana Mall also provides an opportunity for reinvention. Developers are increasingly scouting these high-visibility spaces for "experiential" tenants—such as luxury fitness centers, entertainment venues, and upscale dining—as the First State's shopping districts adapt to the needs of the modern, digital-first consumer.
