PhillyBite10PENNSYLVANIA - In the world of grocery retail, the "independents" are often the heartbeat of small-town Pennsylvania. So, when the Appleby family—who have served Everett and Saxton for over 50 years—announced they were stepping away, a wave of anxiety hit Bedford County. Would these communities be left in a "food desert"?

The answer came with a familiar logo. The GIANT Company officially stepped in to acquire the Everett Foodliner and Saxton Market, and the wait for their grand reopening is almost over.

Mark Your Calendars: The May Reopening Dates

Following a temporary closure for remodeling, the Carlisle-based grocer has confirmed a phased rollout for the two new locations:

  • Saxton (509 Main St.): Set to open its doors on May 1, 2026.
  • Everett (250 West Main St.): Scheduled to follow exactly two weeks later on May 15, 2026.

Both stores will operate from 7 AM to 9 PM daily, with the Everett location also maintaining its vital fuel station—a key resource for residents in that corridor.

Continuity Over Chaos

One of the biggest fears during a corporate takeover is losing familiar faces. In a move that has reassured residents, GIANT has tapped long-time local grocery veterans to lead the transition.

Kyler Runk, a 16-year veteran who previously managed the Saxton Market, will return as the Store Manager for the new Saxton GIANT. In Everett, Wendy Evans, with 34 years of experience, will take the helm. Between the two stores, the company expects to employ more than 120 full- and part-time team members, many of whom are returning employees from the former independent markets.

What's Changing Inside?

While the "bones" of the stores remain the same, shoppers will notice several "GIANT" upgrades:

  1. Standardized Pricing: Residents will now have access to GIANT's larger private-label mix and competitive pricing structures, which can often be lower than those of small independent scales.
  2. Digital Integration: The introduction of the GIANT Choice Rewards program and (eventually) more robust digital couponing.
  3. Renovated Decor: Both locations have undergone "minor remodels" including new signage, fresh paint, and updated interior layouts to match the modern GIANT aesthetic.

The Bigger Picture for PA Retail

This expansion is part of a strategic "rural fill-in" campaign across the Commonwealth. While chains like Wegmans are targeting massive 100,000-square-foot "megastores" in Cranberry Township, and Aldi continues to saturate the Lehigh Valley, GIANT is focusing on maintaining its status as the dominant anchor in small-town Pennsylvania.

By acquiring existing independent markets rather than building from scratch, GIANT is ensuring that the "downtown anchors" of Everett and Saxton remain strong, supporting nearby foot traffic and keeping these communities vibrant.

Fresh InregienceThe Verdict: While the loss of a 50-year-old family business is bittersweet, the arrival of a major regional player ensures that Bedford County shoppers won't have to drive miles out of their way for fresh produce and staples.
