PhillyBite10DELAWARE - For over two decades, the Big Lots in the Milford Plaza has been the go-to destination for everything from discounted patio furniture to those specific "limited time" snacks you can't find at the local Acme. But this week, the "bargain hunt" is reaching its final, frantic chapter.

Following the retail giant's massive Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing and the subsequent collapse of a potential acquisition deal, the Milford location at 690 N Dupont Blvd is in the final stages of its total liquidation. By the end of this month, the storefront that anchors the city's north end will be completely dark.

The "Liquidation to the Walls" Phase

If you've driven past the plaza recently, you've seen the neon-yellow "Store Closing" and "Everything Must Go" banners. As of this week, the store has entered its most aggressive discount phase.

Shoppers are reporting savings of 70% to 90% on remaining inventory. While the furniture gallery and major appliances are mostly gone, the "treasure hunt" continues in the seasonal, home décor, and pantry aisles.

"It's bittersweet," says Julie Hattier, a long-time customer who traveled from Millsboro for one last visit. "I've been coming here for 20 years. It's not just about the discounts; it's about the unique things you won't find anywhere else in Kent County."

Why Is This Happening?

The Milford closure is part of a national "retail correction." After filing for bankruptcy in September, Big Lots initially hoped to sell the brand to a private equity firm. When that deal fell through in late 2024, the company pivoted to an estate-managed liquidation, shuttering hundreds of underperforming stores to save what remains of the corporate platform.

For Milford, the timing is particularly tough. The store was a vital resource for budget-conscious families along Route 113, often serving as a "middle ground" between high-end furniture stores and grocery-only markets.

The "Fixtures" Sale: A Local Business Opportunity

One unusual sight for shoppers this week? The price tags on the shelving, clothing racks, and checkout counters. As part of the final shutdown, Big Lots is liquidating its actual store fixtures. This has drawn a different kind of crowd—local small business owners and antique dealers looking for commercial-grade equipment at a fraction of the cost.

What's Next for Milford Plaza?

The departure of Big Lots leaves a massive 30,000-square-foot hole in the Milford Plaza. While the city has seen recent growth with the expansion of the Bayhealth Sussex Campus, large-format retail spaces are becoming harder to fill.

Rumors among residents suggest interest from other discount heavyweights, such as Burlington or T.J. Maxx, but no official lease has been signed. Some community members are even pushing for a specialized indoor recreation center or a "small-format" Aldi to take over the space, similar to trends seen in New Castle County.

Final Shopping Checklist:

  • Gift Cards: If you still have a Big Lots gift card, use it immediately. These are typically not honored once the store enters its final 48 hours of operation.
  • All Sales Final: During a liquidation, there are no returns. Check your items carefully for damage before leaving the store.
  • Check the Hours: The store is currently operating on "reduced transition hours" and may close early if inventory levels drop too low.
