PhillyBite10RHODE ISLAND - The retail landscape in the Ocean State is navigating a period of significant consolidation as we reach the midpoint of 2026. While Rhode Island's tax-free status on clothing and footwear continues to drive regional traffic, several national mainstays are finalizing their exits from the State premier shopping hubs. Driven by a wave of nationwide liquidations and corporate restructurings, these departures mark a definitive turning point for local malls and neighborhood centers.

Here are the three retail giants leaving Rhode Island this June.

1. Francesca's (Total State Exit)

The boutique staple Francesca's is reaching the final chapter of its physical storefront era this June. Following a second Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in early 2026, the chain is liquidating all of its roughly 400 boutiques nationwide. Known for its curated, small-shop aesthetic, the brand's departure marks a total exit from Rhode Island's retail scene.

Final inventory sales and equipment removal are slated for completion by mid-to-late June 2026. This impacts high-traffic locations across the state, with the final shutters closing at:

  • Providence Place Mall (Providence)
  • Garden City Center (Cranston)
  • Shops at Long Wharf (Newport)

2. Stop & Shop (Strategic Consolidation)

As part of a broader "optimization" of its Northeast footprint, Stop & Shop is finalizing a series of strategic closures across Rhode Island this June. The grocery giant is shuttering underperforming units to focus on its high-performing hubs and modernized "Store of the Future" formats that prioritize digital fulfillment and fresh-focused layouts.

Final inventory clear-outs are scheduled to conclude this month at:

  • 11 Commerce Way (Johnston)
  • 176 Pittman St. (Providence - Eastside Marketplace)

By the end of June 2026, these locations will be fully dark, as the brand consolidates its resources into nearby sites to improve overall efficiency.

3. Eddie Bauer (All Locations)

In a major blow to Rhode Island's outdoor and technical apparel market, the 106-year-old Eddie Bauer is officially exiting the brick-and-mortar space. Following a bankruptcy filing earlier this year and the failure to secure a bidder to maintain physical storefronts, the brand is transitioning to an online-only and wholesale model.

Rhode Island is losing its remaining physical presence this June as the final "Going Out of Business" sales conclude. For residents who relied on the brand for technical gear and outerwear, the loss of these locations is significant. Doors are expected to lock for the last time by late June 2026, marking the brand's total exit from the State major malls.

The Evolution of Rhode Island Retail Space

Rhode Island FlagThe departure of these three icons—spanning the fashion, grocery, and outdoor sectors—leaves notable vacancies in Rhode Island's premier shopping destinations. However, the vacancy also brings opportunity. Developers at Providence Place and Garden City are already scouting these locations for experiential tenants, including medical outpatient suites, boutique fitness centers, and "live-work-play" developments.

As these familiar signs come down this June, they make way for a more service-oriented and diverse commercial landscape in 2026.
