PhillyBite10PHILADELPHIA — If you think you've conquered the ultimate tasting menu, South Philadelphia's Le Virtù is about to test your limits. On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the East Passyunk staple is resurrecting America's most extravagant Italian dining tradition: La Panarda.

Please forget about the standard two-hour prix fixe. This is an eight-hour, 40-course, wine-soaked marathon with the unofficial motto: "eat until you bust." Widely recognized as the only authentic representation of this tradition in the United States, the feast is a massive, communal celebration of the cuisine, culture, and hospitality of Italy's Abruzzo region.

A 369-Year-Old Tradition

To understand the sheer scale of La Panarda, you have to look back to 1657 in Villavallelonga, a remote village of about 900 people tucked into Abruzzo's Marsica territory. Every January, the town honors Sant'Antonio Abate—the patron saint of animals and agriculture—with a multi-day festival of outdoor fires, wandering musicians, and monumental eating.

The festivities culminate in an all-night feast spanning 35 to 50 courses, ending at 8:00 AM the next morning with the distribution of fava soup and egg bread so that no one in the village goes hungry.

"La Panarda is a love letter to both of our homes, Abruzzo and South Philadelphia," says Le Virtù co-owner Francis Cratil-Cretarola. "It is not a tasting menu nor a basic prix fixe dinner. It is an exercise in Abruzzese lunacy. It is a marathon meal and communal act of solidarity, conviviality, and abundance."

The Zero-Kilometer Menu

Since hosting its first Panarda in 2011, Le Virtù has perfected the art of the endurance feast. This year, Executive Chef Andrew Wood is bringing a zero-kilometer (zero-kilometer) philosophy to the table, sourcing the freshest ingredients from local farms and the Jersey coastline to recreate the full breadth of Abruzzo's culinary landscape.

The day's menu will unfold in two massive waves. The first half is a seafood-forward exploration of the Adriatic coast, followed by a meat-focused second half rooted in the pastoral traditions of the region's rugged interior.

Menu Highlights Include:

  • Brodetto alla Vastese: The iconic Adriatic fisherman's stew.
  • Golden Tilefish: Baked to perfection in a salt crust and served with salsa verde.
  • Frascareglie Pasta: Served with ragù, a dish intrinsically linked to the Panarda tradition.
  • Maccarune i Sant'Antonie: A long, thin noodle paired with rich lamb ragù, named for the saint at the heart of the celebration.
  • Whole Roasted Meats: Featuring a whole suckling pig from Green Meadow Farm, grilled local lamb, and aged roasted ribeye with Montepulciano sauce.

To wash down the 40+ courses, Beverage Manager and Sommelier Chris O'Brien has curated a lineup of more than 10 wine pairings sourced from small, independent producers across Abruzzo and the Italian South.

How to Secure a Seat

La Panarda is an intimate event that requires guests to surrender to the day's communal spirit fully. The boundaries between diners disappear, and strangers inevitably become friends by the end of course 20.
