PHILADELPHIA - Since opening its doors in February 2026, MOTW Coffee & Pastries Philadelphia has quickly evolved into much more than a destination for a quick latte. Located at the base of The Murano Condominium at 2101 Market Street, the Center City café is blossoming into a vibrant gathering space where local clubs, organizations, and residents can connect, host events, and build community.

A Vision of Community Connection

The café was founded with a specific goal: to provide a welcoming environment where people from all backgrounds could create meaningful experiences together. For owners Mahmood Islam and Samina Akbar, watching the neighborhood embrace this vision has been deeply rewarding.

"Creating a space for the community was always at the heart of the vision for MOTW," said Akbar. "Seeing people come through our doors not only for coffee and pastries, but to gather, connect, and bring their own communities together, is incredibly rewarding. Whether we are hosting an event or local groups are choosing our space for their own gatherings, it is exciting to see MOTW being used exactly as it was intended."

A Home for Local Groups

Beyond its scheduled events, MOTW is increasingly used by local groups for community-led activities. The Center City café has recently become a home base for:

  • Running and walking clubs
  • Paint-and-sip events
  • Social meetups
  • Various community-driven initiatives

The Philadelphia location actively welcomes organizations and community groups seeking space to collaborate and host events. While they gather, guests can enjoy a menu that features specialty coffee, handcrafted lattes, traditional chai, iced refreshers, and an array of Arabic pastries and desserts.

From Digital Platform to Physical Space

MOTW Coffee & Pastries originally grew out of Muslims of the World, a digital storytelling platform founded by Sajjad Shah. Built to share the experiences of Muslims globally, the platform amassed a community of over 700,000 people and raised millions for humanitarian causes. Shah and his wife eventually expanded that digital mission into physical coffee shops, designing them as inclusive spaces for connection.

For the Philadelphia team, seeing that global vision take root locally is just the beginning.

"We want people throughout Philadelphia to know that MOTW is a space they can make their own," Akbar added. "Whether you are looking for a place to meet with a club, host an event, connect with your neighbors, or simply enjoy a cup of coffee with friends, we want MOTW to be a place where people feel welcome and connected."
