PHILADELPHIA, PA – History will become a scavenger hunt this fall in Northwest Philadelphia as Historic Germantown debuts its second Stamp Rally of the year. Launching at noon on September 12, the Historic Germantown 250th Stamp Rally invites residents and visitors to explore the neighborhood and uncover the pioneers whose stories are rooted throughout the community.
The free, family-friendly experience runs through November 14 and takes participants on a journey across Northwest Philadelphia to collect stamps. To take part, individuals can pick up a free Stamp Rally booklet at any of the 23 participating locations. Each site features a designated “Stamp House” containing a unique stamp. A laminated sheet attached to the Stamp House includes a QR code, which reveals the identity of the specific historical visionary featured at that site—a new twist that keeps the trailblazers' identities a secret until they are uncovered.
The rally is part of Historic Germantown's year-long celebration of America's 250th anniversary. It shifts focus from specific dates and events to the remarkable individuals who have made an impact not only on Germantown but on Philadelphia and the nation. These figures include artists, abolitionists, educators, activists, and innovators.
“Germantown's history has always been shaped by people who challenged expectations, broke barriers, and created change,” said Tuomi Forrest, Executive Director of Historic Germantown. “With this Stamp Rally, we want people to have fun discovering those stories for themselves while exploring the places where so much of that history unfolded. As we celebrate America's 250th anniversary, it's an opportunity to look beyond the dates and events we know and connect with the individuals whose ideas, courage, and contributions helped shape the community we know today.”
The event will culminate in a Wrap Party on Saturday, November 14, from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Historic Germantown Visitor Center, located at 5501 Germantown Avenue. Prizes will be awarded based on the number of stamps collected:
- 6+ stamps/answers: Trailblazer Trading Cards showcasing 18 influential figures.
- 14+ stamps/answers: A Germantown ball cap.
- 20+ stamps (Children): Entry into a grand-prize raffle to win an Explorer Backpack filled with books, toys, and t-shirts.
- 20+ stamps (Adults): A Historic Germantown membership and entry into a raffle for “A Weekend in Historic Germantown,” featuring gift certificates to local businesses, restaurants, and events.
