Philadelphia PA – Mayor Jim Kenney, the City’s Executive Director of the Philadelphia Commission for Women and the City’s Director for LGBTQ Affairs released the following statements in commemoration of the International Day of Women.Philadelphia PA – Mayor Jim Kenney, the City’s Executive Director of the Philadelphia Commission for Women and the City’s Director for LGBTQ Affairs released the following statements in commemoration of the International Day of Women.

Mayor Jim Kenney: “I am continually inspired by the many women in our city and a day without women only reinforces how important their contributions are to Philadelphia.  We all must stand alongside them in their fight to bring equality and justice for all women citywide. We must all be feminists.”

Jovida Hill, Executive Director of the Philadelphia Commission for Women: “Today, as we celebrate International Women’s Day, I’m inspired by my favorite quote from Sojourner Truth, a woman who worked tirelessly for women’s suffrage in the 19th Century. ‘If the first woman God ever made was strong enough to turn the world upside down all alone, these women together ought to be able to turn it back, and get it right side up again!’ Over the last year, the Women’s Commission has worked tirelessly to advance equality for Philadelphia’s women. Together, we’re a force determined to turn things right side up.”

Amber Hikes, Director of the Office of LGBT Affairs: “The Mayor’s Office of LGBT Affairs stands with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer women on this International Women’s Day and all days. Specifically, we take this time to reemphasize our commitment to our trans sisters who fight discrimination, fear, and violence every day and do so with unspeakable courage and conviction. We stand in steadfast solidarity with these women and all women as we work collectively to create a world where we are all safe, valued and respected.”
