PhillyBite Magazine PhilliesPhiladelphia, PA - The Phillies have added two positions to baseball operations with the hirings of former major league outfielder Sam Fuld as major league player information coordinator and Ben Werthan as minor league player information coordinator.


PhilliesFuld, 35, played parts of eight seasons in the major leagues with the Chicago Cubs (2007; 2009-10), Tampa Bay Rays (2011-13), Oakland A's (2014; 2015) and Minnesota Twins (2014). He batted .227 with a .307 on-base percentage, working 153 walks in 599 career games. Defensively, Fuld played all three outfield positions and collected 29 assists. In 633 minor league games, he hit .284 with a .371 on-base percentage and 106 stolen bases. Fuld is a 2004 graduate of Stanford University, where he attained his bachelor's degree in economics.

Werthan, 31, has spent the past six years as the advance scouting coordinator with the Baltimore Orioles. In that role, Werthan reported directly to Orioles manager Buck Showalter and led the team's advance scouting process. He graduated from Dickinson College in 2008 with a bachelor's degree in psychology and has also worked as an intern in the baseball operations departments of the Cincinnati Reds and Tampa Bay Rays.

uld and Werthan will work closely with the Phillies players, coaches, front office staff and research and development department. They will help integrate the use of information in all areas of on-field performance and preparation and make recommendations regarding the most effective areas of future research and analysis.
