PhillyBite10MAINE STATE - The retail landscape in Maine is witnessing a significant shift this season as the "retail apocalypse" reaches several long-standing shopping hubs. From the bustling Maine Mall in South Portland to the popular outlets in Kittery, several household-name apparel brands are entering their final weeks of physical operations. For many Mainers, these departures mark the end of a familiar era for local mall culture and weekend shopping trips.

Here are three iconic clothing retailers shuttering Maine locations this spring.

1. Eddie Bauer (South Portland, Kittery, & Augusta)

In a major blow to Maine's outdoor-loving community, the legendary Eddie Bauer is officially exiting the brick-and-mortar market. After the operator of the brand's physical stores failed to find a buyer during bankruptcy proceedings earlier this spring, the decision was made to shift the century-old brand to a digital-only model.

Maine is losing its entire physical presence, with inventory liquidation sales reaching their final stages at:

  • The Maine Mall (South Portland)
  • Kittery Outlets (Kittery)
  • Augusta Locations

Doors are expected to lock for the last time by late May 2026. While the brand will continue to exist online, the loss of these locations removes a go-to destination for technical gear and winter outerwear that has been a staple in the state for decades.

2. Francesca's (South Portland & Kittery)

The boutique staple Francesca's is reaching the end of the road for its physical storefronts. Following a second bankruptcy filing and the sudden loss of investor funding, the chain is liquidating all 457 of its boutiques nationwide. The brand, known for its curated, free-spirited aesthetic, has struggled to maintain its mall-based model amid rising digital competition.

Maine shoppers are saying goodbye to these neighborhood boutiques at:

  • The Maine Mall (South Portland)
  • Kittery Premium Outlets (Kittery)

"Going Out of Business" signs have been a fixture throughout the spring, with most Maine boutiques expected to be fully vacated by mid-May 2026.

3. Rue21 (All Remaining Locations)

In one of the most drastic hits to teen fashion this year, the Pennsylvania-based Rue21 is liquidating its entire store fleet after filing for its third and final bankruptcy. Unlike previous attempts to reorganize, the brand failed to secure a buyer to keep its physical doors open, leading to a total wind-down of its North American operations.

While the brand had already reduced its footprint in Maine over recent years, the final remaining "store closing" sales are wrapping up this spring at regional shopping centers. Most inventory is expected to be cleared out by late May 2026, marking the brand's total exit from the Maine market.

The Future of Maine's Retail Hubs

Closed SignThe departure of these clothing icons leaves notable vacancies in Maine's premier shopping destinations. However, developers at the Maine Mall and in Kittery are already looking ahead. Many of these spaces are being scouted for "experiential" and community-focused tenants—ranging from entertainment venues and medical suites to local artisan collectives—as Maine's retail hubs adapt to a digital-first economy.
