Kitty Hawk, NC - When tracking down culinary highlights along the Outer Banks, finding a lively spot with a great outdoor space is always a priority—especially when seeking out truly dog-friendly establishments where the four-legged family members are welcome to relax on the patio. Located at 4020 N Croatan Hwy, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949, Shipwrecks Taphouse & Grill delivers exactly that. It is a fantastic, welcoming venue that manages to balance a vibrant bar atmosphere with great coastal comfort food.
Fresh Seafood, Massive Spreads, and Daily Happy Hour
The menu here casts a wide net, offering everything from fresh local catches to classic pub grub. Diners consistently rave about the seafood—specifically the crab dip, shrimp, and flounder—as well as their great burgers and wings.
We recently stopped in for a long afternoon visit, combining their lunch specials with their daily "Happy Hour" food specials (which run from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM every day). Because of the great value, we ordered a massive spread for the table:
- The Classics: Chili, hot dogs, and a perfectly toasted grilled cheese.
- Shareables & Greens: A huge appetizer sampler platter, crispy wings, and a fresh Asian salad to balance it all out.
Despite the sheer volume of our order, every single item came out piping hot, fresh, and incredibly flavorful.
Attentive Service and Beating the Summer Crowds
A lively taphouse relies heavily on its staff to keep the energy up. While some online reviews mention that the service can occasionally get slow—which is a common reality anywhere on the Outer Banks during peak tourist season—our experience was flawless.
We made a point to visit before the heavy summer crowds arrived, and we ended up hanging out on the patio for a full three hours. We had great service from Nicki, who was attentive, friendly, and highly efficient throughout our entire extended visit. It is that kind of hospitality that makes you want to settle in and order another round.
The Verdict
Shipwrecks Taphouse & Grill is a quintessential Kitty Hawk hangout. Between the excellent 2-5 PM Happy Hour specials, the hot and fresh wings and appetizers, and the fantastic dog-friendly patio, it is an incredibly accommodating spot. With stellar service from staff members like Nicki, it is definitely a place you need to stop by when in the area—whether you are grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a three-hour afternoon session.
