MARYLAND - Maryland is famed for its dense forests, stunning beaches, and diversity of flora and fauna - from dense forests to beaches to over 90 mammal species, including black bears, which have become increasingly common across much of Maryland.
Black Bears Are Thriving in Maryland
Maryland Department of Natural Resources recently reported a dramatic surge in black bear populations across Maryland. Since June 1, more than 2,000 adult and subadult black bears have roamed Garrett, Allegany, Washington and Frederick Counties of Maryland -- this represents more bears than at any point since 50 years ago! This increase can be attributed to hard work by Marylanders living alongside black bears without interference from hunters or pets.
Maryland's western forests offer black bears a steady food source of acorns, hickory nuts, and other mast without interference from their human neighbors.
The increase in bear population can be attributed to various factors, including improved habitat conditions and an increase in tolerance of wild animals. While most bear sightings occur in Maryland's four western counties, more sightings have become common throughout much of the state - especially Baltimore County and Washington D.C. Metro areas, where recent bear encounters have spurred public awareness campaigns from DNR and other agencies.
