1. Hop Sing Laundromat: Located at 1029 Race St on the edge of Chinatown, this unmarked speakeasy remains a Philadelphia legend. You will have to ring the bell at the iron gate and pass a strict vetting process by the doorman. Owner Lê runs a tight ship: there is a strict dress code (while the "no sneakers" rule has been relaxed, standards remain high), and cell phones and photos are absolutely forbidden. If you follow the rules, you are rewarded with access to a stunning, library-like atmosphere and some of the most meticulously crafted cocktails in the country.
2. The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. (The Franklin Bar): Named after the country's largest alcohol ring during Prohibition, this legendary establishment relocated in 2022 and now operates inside The Franklin Hotel at 1715 Rittenhouse Square. An unmarked entrance leads to this chic, subterranean bar that continues its long history of delivering daring, wildly creative craft cocktails. It offers an incredible change of pace from standard Center City bars, providing a moody, intimate setting right on the square.
3. The Ranstead Room: Tucked away in a dark and moody space behind a nondescript door at 2013 Ranstead Street, this Stephen Starr speakeasy is one of Center City's best-kept secrets. The decor features vintage wallpaper, deep wine-colored walls, and 1950s pin-up art. The cocktail menu relies heavily on hand-cut ice, house-made mixers, and fresh-squeezed juices, making it the perfect clandestine spot for a meticulously mixed pre- or post-dinner drink.
4. Blind Barber, located at 1325 Sansom Street in Midtown Village, this unique concept operates as a functioning, old-school barbershop by day (where every cut comes with a complimentary cocktail). By night, an unmarked door in the back of the shop leads to a 70s-inspired, multi-level cocktail lounge and speakeasy restaurant. Backed by Phillies superstar Bryce Harper, it has evolved into one of the most stylish and energetic hidden nightlife spots in the city.
5. CookieLab by Insomnia Cookies. This isn't your traditional alcohol-fueled speakeasy—it's a "Sweeteasy." Located directly across from Pat's and Geno's at 833 Wharton Street in South Philly, the storefront looks like a standard Insomnia Cookies shop. However, those in the know can find a secret entrance hidden behind a bookshelf. To enter, you need the weekly password, which you can find in the highlights section of Insomnia Cookies' official Instagram account. Inside, you'll find an exclusive dessert lounge offering highly customizable, over-the-top cookies, milkshakes, and sweet treats.
