PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia's dining scene is welcoming back a fan favorite, as Toll Man Joe's has officially announced its return to the city. The beloved restaurant and sports bar is set to reopen in Washington Square West, taking over the space formerly occupied by the recently closed Mixto at the corner of 12th and Pine Streets.
A Long-Awaited Comeback
Toll Man Joe's originally built a massive and loyal following at its popular Oregon Avenue location in South Philadelphia before being forced to close its doors in 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic. For years, devoted fans have eagerly awaited news of a potential return.
While searching for the perfect permanent home in Philadelphia, the team kept the spirit alive by operating a successful BYOB pop-up in Woolwich, New Jersey. The owners have confirmed that South Jersey diners have nothing to worry about, as the Woolwich location will continue operating as usual.
Transforming a Neighborhood Institution
The search for a new Philadelphia home led the owners to the former Mixto location—a space that itself served as a neighborhood institution for two decades.
The new Toll Man Joe's aims to re-establish itself as a prime community gathering place. The comfortable neighborhood restaurant will feature a dynamic atmosphere, offering guests the chance to enjoy live sports, special events, and occasional live music. Furthermore, the spacious layout at 12th and Pine will allow the restaurant to accommodate private events and celebrations.
The Menu: Award-Winning Wings and Comfort Food
Toll Man Joe's will operate as a full-service restaurant and bar, bringing back its famous award-winning wings. The kitchen will serve elevated breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus that pair Philadelphia comfort food favorites with globally inspired flavors.
To complement the food, the robust bar program will highlight handcrafted cocktails, a thoughtfully curated wine selection, and local craft beers.
Leadership and Opening Timeline
The restaurant's return is being spearheaded by Lori Penrose, one of the founders and owners. She is joined by Executive Chef Arturo Bermudez Luna, who has been with Toll Man Joe's since its earliest days, and Shannon Penrose, the General Manager and Director of Brand & Operations.
While a specific grand opening date has not yet been set, the team expects to welcome guests within the next few weeks, perfectly timed to coincide with the start of the football season. In their announcement, the team expressed deep gratitude to their original staff, their New Jersey team, and the loyal customers who supported them and helped make this comeback a reality.
