Philadelphia, PA - Real estate website Redfin recently placed Philadelphia as the 4th most walk able city in the United States. Redfin's latest results gives Philadelphia a "Walk Score" of 79, up 0.7 points from the previous year. Not enough to place Philly in the top three cities, but the city has earned the fourth place finish for its second year in a row.Philadelphia, PA - Philadelphia has once again claimed the top spot in the USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, officially being named the Most Walkable City in the U.S. for the fourth year in a row.

This consistent recognition highlights what locals have long known: the City of Brotherly Love is best experienced on foot. While other major metropolitan areas like New York City, Boston, and Chicago frequently vie for the title, Philadelphia’s unique combination of history, urban design, and neighborhood culture keeps it at the top of the podium.

Why Philadelphia Reigns Supreme

Philadelphia’s success as a walkable destination is deeply rooted in its original 17th-century city plan, designed by William Penn. His vision of a grid system, connected public squares, and green spaces remains highly functional centuries later.

  • Center City Connectivity: The downtown area is remarkably compact, spanning roughly 26 blocks from the Delaware River to the Schuylkill River. This means visitors can travel from Penn’s Landing to the Schuylkill River Trail in less than an hour, passing through historic hubs like Old City and Rittenhouse Square along the way.

  • Neighborhood Character: Beyond the downtown core, Philly is a "city of neighborhoods." Whether you are exploring the cobblestone streets of Old City, the bustling food scene in Midtown Village, or the museums along the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, these destinations are seamlessly linked.

  • Accessibility: Unlike cities that require complex subway transfers or expensive ride-shares to move between major attractions, Philly allows residents and visitors to bypass traffic entirely, trading gridlock for a stroll through some of the most historic and architecturally stunning streets in America.

A Year of Celebration

The timing of this award is particularly significant for Philadelphia. In 2026, the city is at the heart of the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations (America250). With a massive influx of visitors arriving for the semiquincentennial events, the FIFA World Cup, and MLB All-Star Week, the city’s walkability is a major asset. It ensures that travelers can navigate the city’s festivities with ease, enjoying the food, culture, and history that earned the city this distinction.

The Nuance of Rankings

It is important to note that different platforms use different metrics for "walkability." While USA Today's awards are determined by travel expert nominations and public votes, other platforms—such as Walk Score®—utilize data-driven scores based on proximity to amenities. According to these data-driven metrics for 2026, cities like San Francisco and New York often top the list by score. However, Philadelphia consistently receives high praise for its specific accessibility and affordability, making it stand out as the most budget-friendly of the top-tier walkable major cities.

Whether you are a long-time resident or a first-time visitor, this latest honor serves as a reminder to lace up your shoes and explore. From self-guided historical tours to wandering through the city's famous street art murals, Philadelphia remains a city built for the pedestrian.
