NEW YORK STATE - The shifting retail landscape continues to impact the Empire State as we head into April 2026. From the high-traffic corridors of Manhattan to the suburban hubs of Long Island and Upstate New York, several iconic brands are finalizing their departures.
Whether due to corporate restructuring, bankruptcy liquidations, or a strategic pivot to digital-first models, here are the five major retail chains closing doors across New York this month.
1. Macy’s
As part of its "Bold New Chapter" turnaround strategy, Macy’s is aggressively trimming its physical footprint, with plans to shutter 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026. New York is seeing a significant portion of these cuts this month. Locations confirmed for closure in April include the Boulevard Mall in Amherst, as well as several underproductive spots in Rochester (Mall at Greece Ridge) and Massapequa (Sunrise Mall). Even New York City isn't immune, with scaled-back operations affecting locations in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
2. Francesca’s
Following a total business liquidation, the popular women’s boutique chain is vanishing from New York’s shopping centers. All remaining physical locations—nearly 460 nationwide—are slated to finish their "Going Out of Business" sales by late April. In New York, this includes high-visibility shops in Crossgates Mall (Albany), Roosevelt Field (Garden City), and Walden Galleria (Buffalo).
3. Saks Off 5th
The luxury discount arm of Saks Global is undergoing a massive contraction following the parent company's Chapter 11 filing earlier this year. As part of a plan to shutter 57 "Off 5th" locations, several New York stores are locking their doors this April. Shoppers in Metropolitan New York and the Hudson Valley will see these clearance centers disappear as the brand retreats to focus on its high-end flagship properties.
4. Eddie Bauer
The outdoor apparel veteran is exiting the physical retail space after failing to secure a buyer during its recent bankruptcy proceedings. Unless a last-minute deal is struck, all 175 North American stores are scheduled to close by April 30, 2026. This affects numerous long-standing locations in New York, including those in Syracuse, White Plains, and Manhattan.
5. Walgreens
Continuing its "Footprint Optimization Program," Walgreens is closing dozens of stores this month as part of a multi-year plan to cut 1,200 underperforming locations. New York, which has one of the highest densities of Walgreens and Duane Reade pharmacies, is seeing a "clustering" strategy where older, low-traffic stores are being shuttered in favor of centralized hubs. Watch for final closures this month across the Five Boroughs and Upstate urban centers.
