PhillyBite10CONNECTICUT - The "retail apocalypse" continues to reshape the Connecticut landscape as we move into the second quarter of 2026. A combination of expiring leases, corporate debt restructuring, and a permanent shift toward e-commerce has led several national giants to pull back their physical footprints in the Nutmeg State.

Closing StoreWhile some of these closures are part of multi-year downsizing plans, several major brands are hitting the "final phase" of their liquidations this April. Here are the five major retail chains closing doors across Connecticut this month.

1. Francesca’s

The boutique fashion retailer, once a staple of Connecticut malls from Danbury to Manchester, is officially winding down its remaining operations. After a second Chapter 11 filing in early 2026, the company was unable to find a buyer to keep the physical stores afloat. All seven Connecticut locations, including prominent spots in Westfarms Mall and The Shoppes at Buckland Hills, are slated to complete their inventory blowouts by the end of April.

2. Saks Off 5th

Luxury discount shopping is taking a hit as parent company Saks Global navigates a massive restructuring. Following the closure of dozens of locations nationwide earlier this year, the remaining "Off 5th" outposts in Stamford and Clinton are scheduled to lock their doors for the last time this month. This move marks a significant retreat for the brand as it pivots to focus strictly on its high-end flagship properties and digital sales.

3. Walgreens

As part of a massive three-year plan to shutter 1,200 underperforming stores by 2027, Walgreens has identified several Connecticut pharmacies with leases expiring this month. While a complete list of specific addresses is often withheld until weeks before the final day, several "low-traffic" locations in the Greater Hartford and New Haven areas are expected to cease operations by April 30.

4. Macy’s

While Macy’s remains a dominant force in the retail world, 2026 marks the final year of its "Bold New Chapter" strategy, which involves closing 150 underperforming stores. Following the massive layoffs at the Cheshire fulfillment center earlier this year, the chain is trimming its retail footprint. At least one of its six remaining Connecticut department stores is rumored to be on the April chopping block as the company shifts resources to its small-format "Market by Macy's" concept.

5. Forever 21

The fast-fashion giant has struggled to maintain its massive mall-based storefronts. In a push to stabilize finances, the chain is exiting several high-rent leases in Connecticut. Liquidation sales have been reported at locations in Trumbull, Milford, and Waterford, with the final doors expected to close by the end of the month unless a last-minute restructuring deal is reached.

What This Means for Shoppers

  • Liquidation Sales: Most of these locations began "Total Inventory Blowouts" in late March. April represents the final chance to find discounts ranging from 50% to 90% off.

  • Gift Cards: If you hold gift cards for Francesca's or Forever 21, consumer advocates recommend using them immediately, as bankruptcy proceedings can often lead to the sudden suspension of credit and loyalty programs.

  • Pharmacy Transfers: For Walgreens customers, prescriptions at closing locations are typically transferred automatically to the nearest surviving branch, but it is always wise to call ahead and confirm your new pickup location.
