PENNSYLVANIA - A longtime neighborhood seafood restaurant in Philadelphia is preparing to close after nearly 70 years in business, marking the end of a family-run establishment that served generations of local customers.
Kelly's Seafood, a city staple since the 1950s, recently announced it will permanently close after decades of serving classic seafood dishes to the community. The restaurant had built a loyal following over the years for its casual atmosphere and traditional menu, becoming a go-to destination for local diners seeking fried seafood, crab cakes, and other regional favorites.
Nearly 70 Years of Family Ownership
Founded in 1958 by William T. Kelly, the establishment at 9362 Old Bustleton Avenue has remained firmly in family hands for its entire 68-year run. The restaurant is currently operated by the family's fourth generation, led by twin brothers Brett and Brian Kelly, who manage the front of the house. Other family members, including their sister and nephew, handle administrative duties and kitchen operations, staying true to their long-standing motto: "There's always a Kelly in the kitchen." Over the decades, the nautically themed dining room, early-bird specials, and dense, Cajun-inspired menu remained a comforting constant for Northeast Philadelphia residents. For many, dining at Kelly's wasn't just a meal—it was a family tradition passed down through generations.
The End of a Neighborhood Staple
The difficult decision to step away comes as the owners prepare for retirement. While the family is at peace with passing the torch to a new buyer, Brett Kelly noted that the decision was heavily rooted in family considerations, stating clearly that the Kelly name will not continue under new ownership.
The turnkey property is currently on the market, listed for $2.2 million. The comprehensive sale package includes:
- The roughly 7,300-square-foot building
- The restaurant's liquor license
- All kitchen equipment and interior furnishings
- An attached apartment unit
Honoring the Community
The Kelly family sincerely thanks their patrons for their steadfast support over the years, especially during tough times like the COVID-19 pandemic, which strengthened community bonds.
"We have been honored to serve you and your families. You stuck by us through some very challenging times, and we thank you for that." — The Kelly Family.
Important Information for Customers:
- Kelly's Seafood will continue to serve its traditional menu and operate normally during the market listing process, ensuring the community can still enjoy their favorites during this transition.
- Customers are encouraged to redeem any remaining gift certificates before the sale concludes, so they can use their credits without issue.
- Reimbursements: The restaurant has pledged to reimburse the cost of any gift certificates purchased within the past year for those who cannot make it in before the doors close for good.
As Northeast Philadelphia watches this Old Bustleton institution prepare for its final chapter, the community holds onto nearly seven decades of crab legs, chowder, and neighborhood memories.
