PHILADELPHIA - Chestnut Hill is set to shine once again as the Chestnut Hill Conservancy announces the return of its annual Night of Lights. Celebrating its 9th year, the streetscape exhibition will run from Friday, October 2 through Monday, October 5, 2026. Each evening from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, Germantown Avenue will be transformed into a vibrant open-air museum, using projected videos and archival images from the Conservancy and other collections to illuminate the area's rich local history, architecture, and landscapes.
This year's event holds special significance, as it joins the city's official PHL250 programming and offers a unique, neighborhood-level perspective on Philadelphia's approaching semiquincentennial. Thanks to a generous $20,000 grant from the Philadelphia City Fund, the 2026 exhibition will feature expanded installations designed to deepen public engagement with the shared history of Chestnut Hill, Northwest Philadelphia, and the lower Wissahickon watershed.
The four days is packed with engaging programming for the whole community:
- Friday, October 2 (7:00 PM): The festivities kick off with a "Flip the Switch" opening ceremony at the Conservancy's headquarters, located at 8708 Germantown Ave.
- Friday, October 2 (7:00 PM – 9:00 PM): Opening night coincides with First Friday offerings hosted by the Chestnut Hill Business District. Attendees can enjoy live music, local storytellers, interactive activities, vendors, and giveaways along the avenue.
- Sunday, October 4 (10:00 AM): Families can head to Hilltop Books for the event's first-ever family-friendly book reading of "Bizarre Bugs, Toads, and Butt-Breathers," tailored for curious young nature lovers.
The historical celebration won't end when the lights go down. Supported by the same Philadelphia City Fund grant, the Conservancy will also debut its inaugural 10x10 History Jam on October 15. The new event invites speakers from across Northwest Philadelphia to share compelling stories of local arts, architecture, and preservation.
