What is Florida Style BBQ?FLORIDA - Although its roots lie in the southeast United States, Florida takes barbecue to another level. Here you'll find unique practices from multiple regional styles coming together into a signature style.

Florida Barbecue Is the Regional Style You're Overlooking?

One of the most noticeable influences is St. Louis-style barbecue ribs, which are grilled before being basted with a tomato-based vinegar-based sauce throughout their cooking process. Typically sweeter than its southern counterparts, but still offers intense vinegar flavors.

Florida's Cuban and Caribbean roots influence its barbecue scene as well. Citrus flavors such as orange and lemon are used to preserve meats and add fresh flavors; Florida also celebrates jamon traditions of its islands and Jamaican jerk chicken and smoked pork for added authenticity.

Florida is a coastal state, so seafood is integral to Florida barbecue restaurants. Smoked mullet (known for "business in front and party in the back") has become a regional delicacy and can be found at places such as Ted Peter's Famous Smoked Fish alongside coleslaw and German potato salad.

Not just pork is enjoyed at Florida barbecue restaurants - shrimp, and oysters are often included on their menu, too! And no festival would be complete without classic dishes like smothered nachos, loaded tater tots, and mac and cheese! Many Central Florida festivals feature these beloved sides alongside hot sliders with various barbecue sauces available to them as well.
