I like to say, 'you'll go to McGillin's for the $5 drafts, but you'll stay and go back for the food.' Their cheesesteak is served with provolone cheese melted on top, a bag of chips, and pickles. The provolone on top makes this a hardy cheesesteak.
I asked her if she had been to McGillin's.
She said, 'yes, but you have to get there early, or you'll be standing in line.'
I asked her if she had their cheesesteak?
She said. 'they have food?' Yes, McGillin's has food, and it is excellent food.
There is a fair amount of meat under that provolone, and the meat has a good flavor. I like to order my cheesesteak with mushrooms that enhance the flavor of the meat.
One of my favorite things about McGillin's is that I have been there at least five times (one time recording a podcast and getting to hear the McGillin's story from several different long time employees). Each time I find a new reason to love McGillin's.
McGillin's opened its doors in 1860. You don't have to be a history buff to appreciate that this place has been around since 1860. Abraham Lincoln, yes, the Abraham Lincoln from our history books, was president when McGillin's opened their doors. They have a sign that hung behind the original bar. They have free postcards. They used to have free soup at lunch, but COVID rules ended that. The walls are a Philadelphia history lesson. They have original liquor licenses dating back forever hanging in the rafters.
My newest reason for loving McGillin's is the guest/memory book. I heard that McMillan was known for people meeting there, getting engaged, and then married. On my latest trip to McGillin's, I got to see the guest/memory book. A lot more than a couple of people met, got engaged, and got married at McGillin's. This book is full of stories and pictures of people that met at McGillin's. A couple that met at McGillin's and returned to celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary wrote a lovely entry about their McGillin's love story.
Go to McGillin's for the $5 drafts, stay for something to eat, and then keep going back to learn more reasons to love McGillin's.
