PHILADELPHIA - For one night only, East Passyunk's celebrated Italian restaurant Le Virtù is transforming its kitchen into a 100% gluten-free and celiac-safe environment. On Thursday, November 5, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 9, the acclaimed South Philadelphia staple will serve an entirely gluten-free menu that pays homage to the flavors and traditions of Italy's Abruzzo region.
Le Virtù Brings an All-Gluten-Free, Celiac-Safe Night to East Passyunk
Dining out with celiac disease or severe gluten intolerance often means facing a restricted menu, interrogating staff about cross-contamination, and worrying about safety protocols. To eliminate that friction, Le Virtù is overhauling its evening operations to provide a completely worry-free experience for guests with dietary restrictions.
The Preparation: Creating a Safe Environment
To guarantee a safe dining environment, Le Virtù will close its doors on Wednesday, November 4. During this closure, Executive Chef Andrew Wood and the restaurant staff will deep-clean and scrub the entire kitchen, bar, and prep areas.
“We know so many people in our lives and over the years that are now GF and that have celiac—including people in and out of the industry,” said Chef Wood. "We want our patrons and friends to have a safe space where we can all share in our love of food again—and not worry about getting sick, asking too many questions, and not knowing our protocols.”
Owners Francis Cratil-Cretarola and Catherine Lee already offer several gluten-free options on their standard menu. Still, this dedicated evening allows the culinary team to push boundaries and serve highly specialized dishes without the risk of cross-contamination.
The Abruzzo-Inspired Menu
The one-night event features a massive, completely gluten-free à la carte menu spanning antipasti, primi, secondi, contorni, and dolci. Rather than serving basic substitutions, the kitchen is executing complex, regional Abruzzese dishes.
Antipasti Highlights:
- Taglieri Misti: A selection of house-cured salumi and giardiniera.
- Pampanella Molisana: Roasted pork belly skewers with cruschi peppers and arugula.
- Salciccia Griglia: Grilled Abruzzese sausage served with a saffron-lentil ragu, peppers, and house-made ricotta.
Gluten-Free Primi (Pastas):
- Buckwheat Tortiglioni: Tossed with an octopus ragu, cuttlefish ink, ceci neri, and lemon.
- Green Pea Fusilli: Served with porcini sugo, seared local mushrooms, spinach, and aged balsamic.
- Rigatoni alla Vittoria: Featuring roasted butternut squash, Abruzzese saffron, double-smoked bacon, and pecorino.
- Spaghetti: Topped with a tomato-braised goat ragu and fresh rosemary.
Secondi (Entrees):
- Peposo: A rich, red wine-braised beef shoulder with rosemary and Yukon gold potato puree.
- Bombette di Cisternino: Bacon-wrapped, caciocavallo-stuffed pork loin paired with grilled zucchini and roasted potatoes.
- Seared Red Snapper: Plated with piennolo tomatoes, roasted peppers, and a saffron butter sauce.
Dolci (Desserts): The dessert menu includes a chocolate olive oil cake with red wine-poached pears, a citrus-infused ricotta cheesecake, and the traditional Lu Parrozz'—a flourless almond cake flavored with orange, saffron, and dark chocolate ganache.
