Maryland FlagANNAPOLIS, MD – Following the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, Maryland Governor Wes Moore has ordered that the United States flag and the Maryland state flag be lowered to half-staff effective immediately. This directive, announced on April 21, 2025, serves as a mark of respect for the life and service of the late pontiff.


Flags Lowered to Half-Staff Until Interment

The flags will remain lowered across Maryland until sunset on Saturday, April 26, 2025, the day of Pope Francis's interment.

In his announcement, Governor Moore paid tribute to the Pope's global influence and spiritual leadership:



"Pope Francis – the People's Pope – led with humility, compassion, and love for all people," said Gov. Moore. "His strength in spiritual leadership will live on in the hearts of the faithful. Dawn and I join Catholics across Maryland alongside the broader faith community, our country, and those worldwide who mourn his passing and honor his legacy of service with deep solemnity."

The lowering of the flags signifies a period of public mourning and respect within the state, acknowledging Pope Francis's impact on millions worldwide, including the Catholic community and people of all faiths within Maryland.
