PHILADELPHIA - A surge of gun violence swept through Philadelphia from Saturday evening into early Sunday morning, leaving at least two people dead and five others injured in six separate shootings across the city. Some reports put the broader weekend toll higher, citing three fatalities and eight people wounded when stabbings were also included.
One of the most heartbreaking incidents occurred in Port Richmond, where a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed after an argument at a gas station near Richmond Street and Castor Avenue. Police said the teenager was with a group of other young people when a dispute broke out with a 40-year-old man. The man allegedly pulled out a gun and shot the teen in the back. The boy ran a short distance before collapsing and was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Police took the adult suspect into custody.
In West Philadelphia, another 40-year-old man was fatally shot on the 1200 block of North Redfield Street just before 7 PM Saturday. Investigators described the killing as domestic-related, saying the suspect and the victim were both romantically involved with the same person. No arrest had been announced as of Sunday evening.
Two other teenagers were also wounded in separate attacks. One 17-year-old was shot in the hip in the Holmesburg section of Northeast Philadelphia after officers were flagged down near Frankford Avenue. He was listed in stable condition. Another 17-year-old was shot in the chest in Kensington and remained in critical condition. Police recovered multiple shell casings at the Kensington scene.
Authorities continue to search for suspects in several of the weekend’s shootings. The string of violence has once again drawn attention to ongoing concerns about gun crime in the city, particularly involving young people, as Philadelphia residents woke up Sunday to news of the deadly Halloween weekend.
