Philadelphia, PA – Korshak Bagels at 10th and Morris Streets in South Philadelphia will close its doors this month on September 24th. After two and a half years of operations, owner Philip Korshak has made the difficult decision to close his business due to economic reasons.
Korshak, a Brooklyn native who moved to Austin in the early 2000s, first developed an interest in dough — specifically, bagel making — while working up the ranks of Home Slice Pizza. He came to Philly in 2018 and landed a job as a dough maker at Angelo’s Pizzeria in the Italian Market, setting up a pop-up in its kitchen for his bagels. In February 2020, he signed the lease for his shop only to see its opening beset by pandemic-related delays.
Since opening in mid-May 2021, Korshak Bagels has framed itself as a people-first business for employees and customers. The spot soon became a favorite for neighborhood residents and beyond, garnering a spot as one of Bon Appetit’s 50 Best New Restaurants in America for 2022. It was “a place,” according to its website, “where you go and meet the friend you have not yet met” — appropriate given the amount of time customers could expect to spend in Korshak’s notoriously long lines.
The news has been received by an outpouring of support and fond farewells on social media from customers who have come to love Korshak Bagels over the past two years. Korshak thanked everyone who supported him with an often-repeated mantra: “Every bagel is a love letter.”
Korshak Bagels will be open until September 24th; customers are encouraged to visit before then for one last taste of their beloved bagels.
