The Reading Terminal Market first opened for business in 1892 to house local vendors under one roof after the postwar market decline. The Reading Terminal Market first opened for business in 1892 to house local vendors under one roof after the postwar market decline. 124 years later, the market is still going strong and the permanent residence to almost 90 individually owned and operated food establishments, produce stands, fish markets, coffee shops, general stores, and more. The market offers something for everyone including special events such as cooking classes, market tours, movie nights, and music shows.

Not being a Philadelphia resident, I was never exposed to all the incredible places the city had to offer until my adult years. I can still remember my very first visit to the Reading Terminal Market; the overwhelming feeling of excitement, curiosity, and hunger had immediately overcome my abilities to think straight upon my initial entry. I did not know which way to go, what to look at first, or even where to eat. The fresh and ambrosial aromas within the market flooded my senses with an unforgettable combination of brewing coffee, fresh cut flowers, and savory foods. For a while, I just walked around taking it all in and watching the regulars flock straight towards their favorite eateries or carefully select the freshest produce. That’s when I spotted my foodie heart’s desire; The Original Turkey.

Thanksgiving dinner has always been my absolute favorite meal, so discovering this remarkable food stand which offers Thanksgiving all year around was pure bliss. While waiting in line at The Original Turkey, my mouth watered from the sight of several hot out of the oven whole turkeys sitting on the carving block next to the endless delectable sides to choose from. I went with a classic thanksgiving turkey sandwich that consisted of juicy carved turkey, robust and moist stuffing, tart, yet sweet cranberry sauce, drenched in full-flavored brown gravy, between two freshly baked sourdough slices of bread. It was the messiest, but most delicious sandwich my taste buds had ever experienced. The components were perfectly layered to ensure each bite was an explosion of flavor. The Original Turkey delivers impeccable and quality comfort food you’re sure to love.
