Esterly's Sandwich ShopPhiladelphia, PA - Esterly's Sandwich Shop is what the Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure is all about. I could have kept eating cheesesteaks from North Wilmington, and my life would be have been fine. But I started an adventure.

Mertztown Cheesesteaks | Esterly's

Esterly's Sandwich Shop is January's Pick for The Cheesesteak Adventure 2021 Calendar

I made a new friend, Mike, who told me about a Cheesesteak place in Mertztown, PA. So, I begrudgingly took the hour and a half ride to Mertztown, and somewhere on the way, I stop listening to the voice in my head tell me how stupid I was for driving an hour and a half to get a Cheesesteak. I'm glad I did and got a chance to see what a beautiful ride it is up to Mertztown.

One Interesting fact I learned was that Esterly's Cheesesteaks, have traveled to Mt Everest, Mt Kilimanjaro, Japan, Korea, Tahiti, and all 50 states.

Rod the current owner is the third generation of sandwich makers. His grandfather, started out by selling cheesesteaks in his side yard across the street from a farm 51 years ago and today they still sell cheesesteaks from that same location.

Rod could have made the same cheesesteaks that his grandfather and father did, but he decided to make his own. Rod invented the no grease cheesesteak. The no grease Cheesesteak travels very well, and a Craze began.

I ordered a small cheesesteak and a small order of pierogies, only because that's what Mike got.

In 'the valley,' they use a soft roll, and most places make their sauce. There's a fair amount of meat on this Cheesesteak, and a perfect amount of cheese melted throughout the whole sandwich.

Mike insists that the Cheesesteak tastes better after it sits out awhile. I did a little experiment and saved half of my Cheesesteak for the hour and a half ride home. Son of a gun, there's something about the way this Cheesesteak congeals.

Congeals is probably not the right word, but this Cheesesteak does get better(?) as the meat, cheese, and roll blend together. The blend has a better connotation than congeals.
