Philadelphia, PA - Wednesday after the election, and it was getting towards the end of dinner time. I was envisioning a quick stop at Saladworks and then going home to wait for Thursday.

I took one more URBER ride and ended up taking a very nice young man to Philadelphia. I have two grown daughters, he has three young daughters. He let me get on my soapbox about raising daughters.
I enjoyed the ride. After I dropped him off, I did a quick Google search for pizza near me. Mattei Family Pizza came up, and I saw they had a Mexican cheesesteak.
The only question left did I take it to a brewery to get a beer, or do I head for home, Delaware. Mattei Family Pizza is in Point Breeze. I know Point Breeze is a good/up and coming neighborhood, but I am a frail old man from the suburbs and happy there was a police station nearby.
Mattei’s is a nice little place. The movie posters on the wall were written in Spanish, but they had a Dean Martin/Burt Reynolds feel. They have tables inside and beer in the drink case.
The young men working were a treat. I took my Mexican cheesesteak outside for a trunk picnic. I know styrofoam is terrible for the environment, but I like it for to-go cheesesteaks.
The thicker sliced meat and roll jumped out of the styrofoam and smacked me in the face. The meat was not chopped, and it stands out in a very delicious cheesesteak. I had minor gristle issues. You need to take smaller bites, which is a whole different issue for me. The meat was excellent and noticeable but was the weak link of this cheesesteak.
The roll was the star of this cheesesteak. This roll made a below-average/average cheesesteak better, and I now have to rethink my view of the roll’s role. The roll was seeded and toasted.
What is a Mexican Cheesesteak
A mayonnaise-based refried bean concoction made this a Mexican cheesesteak. There were Jalapeno’s with the refried beans, and they made this cheesesteak hot.
I don’t know where it came from, but this cheesesteak was oily. We did have a roll blow out the issue. I would pair this cheesesteak with mucho cervezas.
