What about the roll? Does this mean our whole cheesesteak lives have been a lie? Should we have been eating cheesesteaks on round rolls? McNally's Tavern started serving the Schmitter on a round roll in 1929. In 1930 Pat Olivieri made his first cheesesteak. He was a hot dog vendor. Is it safe to assume the first cheesesteak was served on a hot dog bun?
Did the Hot Dog traditionalist of the time protest the cheesesteak being served on hot dog buns? Many people I talk to say the roll is essential for any cheesesteak. I believe when a cheesesteak is made with excellent meat, the roll is relegated to the role-player it is meant to be. Sorry, I can't pass up a good food pun. Is it the meat? Is it the roll? Duplicate 64 cheesesteak entries as the People's Bracket. Questions will be answered, and answers will be questioned in The 2022 March Cheesesteak Madness Judge's Bracket. Starting tomorrow (maybe Monday), Judges will debate meat vs. roll vs. cheese. At the same time, they eat, grade, and pick a winner in cheesesteak vs. cheesesteak matches until we have a Judge's Champion.
March Cheesesteak Madness mirrors the NCAA basketball tournament. Sixty-four entries in a bracket-style tournament. Sixty-four entries are broken into four regions. Our regions are; 1. Philly. 2. Delaware county. 3. NJ/DE. 4.
The Other Philly Counties (primarily Montgomery, Bucks, and Chester). It takes six rounds to crown a champion. Along the way, we will crown Regional Champions. You can follow all of the action on Phillybite and the Philadelphia Cheesesteak Adventure YouTube channel and Facebook page.
